Canning

Do you can any produce from your garden?  Is it pretty easy?  I'm afraid I would accidentally introduce bacteria or not get a good seal if I tried canning.

Organic Food Coupons?

What are some good sources for coupons for organic foods?  I always see coupons for regular foods, most of which I don't want to eat, but it'd be nice to get some discounts on healthier groceries.

Store Brand Organic Milk?

Walmart and Publix have started carrying their own generic organic milk.  Does anyone know anything about the quality of either brand, or should I continue with Stonyfield?

Bee Hives

I was passing by a local farm and saw they were advertising bee hives to take home with you.  While I think it would be neat to have my own honey and beeswax, I'm not sure I can deal with having so…Continue

Nortella replied to Moxie's discussion 'Using coffee grounds in your garden'
Adding coffee grounds helps deter the slugs (though won't eradicate them completely) and used alone (instead of part of a compost pile) and in large quantities, makes your soil more acidic for those acid-loving plants.  In small amounts it…

Ours is about 30 minutes away, which isn't too bad but still kind of farther away than we'd like. Sorry to hear that yours is even longer away from you! It does make getting organic foods difficult when all the good places are so far away…

If you're scared about not canning something right, you could possible take a class on canning! I think around here there's a local church group that teaches "how to can" classes and it's normally pretty cheap.

It depends on what things you want to can.  I can tomatoes (with added acid), jams and jellies, and pickles because I use the  hot water bath canning method, which I would never use on low acid veggies.  If you are pressure canning,…

I wish we had a Whole Foods nearby.  The closest one is over an hour away so we don't go too frequently.  I had heard their coupons were awesome though.

I never notice the difference between different milk brands, either (though fresh milk usually has a different taste to it) so I can't help there. I'd recommend trying some out and seeing what happens!

Yes! My Whole Foods gives out really good coupons, and I think you can combine them with manufacturer coupons. So you can get a really good deal whenever the stars align, haha!

I rarely see organic food coupons. Sometimes bigger brands like Stoneyfield will have them, but that's about it. I know you can sometimes find in-store coupons or ad coupons at stores like Whole Foods or Earth Fare.

Probably the best place would be on the product's homepage, first, and then if that doesn't work you can ask companies directly. Sometimes if you write to them and say you love their product, they'll send coupons in return.

I tend to agree with you, Sandy.  I don't see why I can't use the cookbooks I have and just substitute organic products when I can.

I use vinegar and water in a 50/50 ratio as an all purpose/glass cleaner.  If I need more scrubbing power, I'll sprinkle baking soda on the surface, then spray it down with the vinegar water.  For my floors I use one cup of vinegar to…

Like most generic brands, it's just something you have to try. All milk tastes the same to me, so the best you can do is try it and see how it tastes. Walmart has been getting a lot of requests from the public to start carrying more organic…

I just grab a small amount (like 1/4 tsp but I never measure) and spread it over my armpits in the morning.  It's not an antiperspirant though, so if you sweat a lot, you may want to try mixing a batch.  Use 6 tbsp of coconut oil with…
