Why must milk be pasteurised?

I have discovered a farm near where we live that keeps Jersey cows and sells fresh unpasteurised milk. This makes me wonder why the milk sold in supermarkets has to be pasteurised?

How do we know ?

How do we know that goods that we buy as organic are truly grown without any chemical additives? We have only the suppliers word for it.

It has to be pasteurized so it won't spoil as quickly, like the others said. But if you can keep getting it from that local farm-- do so!

There are quite a few places you can get raw milk and it is well worth it for the health and taste benefits if you can find someone. Pasteurization makes for milk with a longer shelf life so that it can be shipped, but if you buy locally and you…

Getting milk from a store is very different from getting it from a local farmer. As long as you are sure the farmer has hygienic practices, get the raw milk! It has more health benefits.

Why did they raid a place that sold raw milk? I'm assuming that you mean unpasteurised? I recognise the need to pasteurise milk but in the olden days we drank it warm from the cow and I think people should be able to choose.

Some kinds of food aren't available organically but I choose organic wherever possible. The bakery where I buy pastries for instance, bakes using organic flour and sugar but other ingredients may not be organic.

Social networking is a great way to get information out there. There are a few members of my family who already advertise their home business on Facebook with great success.

There used to be quality issues when milk had to travel to get to get to market, before refrigerated trucks. So pasteurization was a must if you lived in the city.

I know Haiti burned it's crops back in January and I believe Hungary was the last country to do so. You may be thinking of this. Here is a link about it.

When I'm buying packaged food at the store, I look for the USDA organic label. Local farmers have usually been pretty honest when they don't grow food organically, and I can always tour the farms and ask lots of questions.

I buy from my local farmer's market because, although there are a few services like you mention in my area, they are forced to charge more due to the delivery costs. For those people who don't live near to a farmer's market, it's…

I hate Monsanto with a passion! The seeds they force the Indian farmers to buy cost a fortune and the plants don't produce their own seeds so the farmers are forced to buy more. It's a big swindle!

It is also possible to be inspected and monitored, which gains you certification. This should provide peace of mind for concerned customers. Of course the term 'organic' is quite wide, so it's worth doing some research and asking a…

If it's packaged food and it states organic, there are certain conditions the manufacturer of the food must meet to put that wording on the packaging. At the farmer's market you are really at the mercy of what the grower tells you though,…

I think that is part of why it is so important to buy locally. If you develop a relationship with growers in the area, you have a better chance of knowing what is going on in their outfit. I know that, around here, the farmers who are using the most…

Dora Day replied to Nortella's discussion 'When Did You Start With Organic Food?'
I remember always having a garden when I was young and my parents also grew food the old fashioned way, so organic was not a choice, it was just the way things were back then. I think the difference between now and then is obvious but it must be…
